Disability Redefined

Disability according to the convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRPD), is a evolving concept. It results from the interaction of impairments which are internal eg missing a limb, not being able to see, hear or speak interacting with external barriers such as negative societal barriers and barriers to accessing information eg lack of braille literature & communication eg lack of sign language. Therefore without barriers disability would literally be non-existent.

What would happen to people with disabilities if they lived in a barrier free world? Imagine a situation whereby society actually made a deliberate attempt to invest in the talents and abilities of people with disabilities while maximizing their full inclusion into society. A world where businesses would create products and services that are universally accessible.

The focus would shift from concentrating on what they lack. Instead the focus will be on their strengths. Which in summary would create people with thisability.

We as Thisability therefore aim to create a society of “thisabled” people!
